New CanVec data now available

December 16, 2011

This 9th release of CanVec, including:

  • Addition of Aboriginal Lands new layer - Administrative Boundaries theme (4 039 datasets);
  • Addition of Municipal Boundaries new layer - Administrative Boundaries theme for Yukon, Nunavut, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, and Ontario (1 188 datasets);
  • Addition of 221 new datasets;
  • Update of National Road Network (NRN) for Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Quebec (2 167 datasets);
  • Addition of Contour and Elevation point metric entities (277 datasets);
  • Correction of 26 discrepancies.

It is strongly recommended to use the 7-ZIP software to uncompress large-size files.

The metadata are now available in XML format - Beta version according to the Standards CAN/CGSB-171.100-2009 - North American Profile of ISO 19115: 2003 Geographic Information - Metadata (NAP - Metadata).

The style sheet canvecEnglish.style has been updated with new codes for the Hydrography theme. Please take note that the CanVec style sheet is not compatible with the Version 10 of the ArcGIS software.

The complete coverage of CanVec and Toporama products is planned for Spring 2012.

Improvement of the Web Map Service-GeoBase

This service offers upgraded viewing characteristics, and updated topographical data on a regular basis. The WMS-GeoBase Service is composed of different topographic data stores, and offers several layers of information. New products available include: Land Cover, Circa 2000 and Municipal Boundaries. Please refer to the Web Map Service (WMS) for more information.

New Municipal Boundaries data layer available on GeoBase

Through the collaboration of several provinces, and territories as well as GeoConnections support, Natural Resources Canada is pleased to announce the new Municipal Boundaries product.

Data downloads by province or territory are available for Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and New Brunswick. The Municipal Boundaries datasets are available in Shape, GML, and KML formats.

SPOT 4 / 5 Orthoimagery, national coverage complete on GeoBase!

The GeoBase SPOT 4 / 5 orthoimagery coverage is now complete. This imagery covers all Canadian territory south of 81° N, representing more than 95% of Canada's total land mass. Please refer to the GeoBase News for more details.

New Canadian Topographic Maps

NRCan announces the release of 36 new, updated or re-released Canadian Topographic Maps accessible via GeoGratis. This release includes new maps covering regions of Canada's North previously unmapped at 1:50 000 scale, as well as updated maps for areas in Ontario, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. New CanVec data now available

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) announces the 8th release of CanVec including:

  • Some attributes are added and eliminated;
  • Addition of 369 new datasets;
  • Update of National Road Network (NRN) for six provinces and territories;
  • 277 datasets now contain Contour and Elevation point (metric) entities;
  • Correction of 20 discrepancies.

Note: The CanVec 8th release includes a second layer for the Transport theme (QC_TR) for Quebec only. For more information, please refer to the Canvec - Release notes (PDF version, 100 KB).

NRCan announces the release of 324 new, updated or re-released Canadian Topographic Maps accessible via GeoGratis. This release includes new maps covering regions of Canada's North previously unmapped at 1:50 000 scale, as well as updated maps for areas in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. See the list of newly released topographic maps on GeoGratis.

With this release, the number of Canadian Topographic Maps released as part of the CanTopo collection stands at 1302.

New Release: Toporama, now available!

Toporama datasets are geo-referenced raster images that can be combined to cover an area of interest or serve as background data for various applications. This can be of significant interest to users of global positioning systems (GPS), hikers, and tourists who, without being Geomatics specialists, are nevertheless comfortable with digital topographic data.

This 5th release of Toporama product corresponds to CanVec product 7th release.
